" Welo uses the dark authority of engraving's massive detail and inky blacks to good effect. 'After and Before' is in one sense a genre picture of an old bridge. But the open-bit grasses and trees, with the ink half wiped out of them, leaving just the black rims of their contours surrounding gray shades, fascinate for reasons other than the pathos of the rickety bridge.
